A power bank is primarily a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to supply power to another device. Its transport classification, packing route, state of charge, marks, labels and documents must therefore be confirmed before a factory books space or hands cartons to a courier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The correct route depends on the battery&#8217;s Watt-hour rating, quantity, mode of transport, packaging configuration, origin, destination, carrier and any operator variations. This guide gives importers a practical framework for planning an OEM power bank shipment from China. It does not replace the current dangerous-goods regulations or the acceptance decision of the carrier handling the actual consignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The short answer: how do you ship power banks from China?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start by treating the power bank as a lithium-ion battery, not as an accessory packed with equipment. For air cargo, power banks are normally classified as <strong>UN 3480, Lithium ion batteries<\/strong>. Confirm that the production battery type has passed UN 38.3, calculate and mark its Wh rating, select a trained dangerous-goods forwarder, agree the applicable packing instruction and prepare the package and documents for the selected airline and route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For sea freight, the shipment remains dangerous goods and must be prepared under the current IMDG Code, together with the carrier, port and national requirements that apply to the route. Do not copy an air-freight carton or document set into a sea booking without review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Freeze the exact power bank, cell, battery pack and packaging specification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirm the Wh rating and transport classification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Match the finished product to its UN 38.3 test basis and test summary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose air, sea or another route with a forwarder qualified for lithium batteries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approve inner protection, outer packaging, marks, labels and overpack arrangement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepare the transport, commercial and customs documents required for that booking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obtain carrier acceptance before releasing the shipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why a power bank is normally UN 3480 for air cargo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IATA defines a power bank as a portable unit whose primary purpose is to provide power to another device. For air-transport purposes, it is treated as a battery. Adding a cable, small flashlight, display or wireless-charging function does not normally turn it into equipment containing a battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters. A carton containing power banks, charging cables and AC adaptors does not automatically qualify as UN 3481, lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment. The adaptor or cable is not the equipment that the power bank powers. Ask the dangerous-goods provider to confirm it in writing against the finished product and packing configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calculate Watt-hours before requesting a freight quote<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lithium-ion transport limits use Watt-hours rather than the USB output capacity shown in marketing. Calculate the battery energy from the battery&#8217;s nominal voltage and rated capacity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wh = nominal voltage (V) \u00d7 capacity (Ah)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A power bank using a 10,000mAh battery rated at 3.7V has a nominal energy of 37Wh: 3.7 \u00d7 10 = 37. The result must agree with the product rating label, battery specification, UN 38.3 records and shipping documents. Do not calculate transport Wh from a 5V USB output rating or from the product&#8217;s usable output capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a model has several capacity versions, prepare separate controlled records. A 10,000mAh and a 20,000mAh product in the same enclosure are not interchangeable in the transport file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Air freight requirements for power banks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations are updated annually, and airlines may apply variations that are stricter than the general provisions. The current 2026 IATA battery guidance states that power banks not exceeding 100Wh are shipped under Section IB of Packing Instruction 965, while power banks above 100Wh fall under Section IA. Package quantity limits, UN specification packaging, label dimensions, marks, overpacks, documentation and airline variations must be checked against the current DGR and the actual booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 30% state-of-charge rule is not a packaging claim<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Power banks shipped as UN 3480 by air must be offered at no more than 30% of rated capacity under the normal PI 965 route. This is a shipment condition, not a permanent product specification. Define how the factory will set the charge level, how it will sample and record the result, and how long the goods may wait before handover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IATA does not require a separate certificate solely to state that PI 965 batteries are below 30% SoC. The signed Shipper&#8217;s Declaration certifies compliance with the applicable rules. A carrier or forwarder may still request a factory record as part of its acceptance process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marks and labels must match the selected packing route<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical Section IB package for qualifying power banks may need the UN number and proper shipping name, the UN 3480 battery mark, the Class 9 lithium-battery hazard label, the Cargo Aircraft Only label and any applicable net-quantity marking. The exact layout, size and placement must be approved for the package. If an overpack hides the package marks and labels, the required information normally has to be reproduced on the overpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are transport-package controls. Do not print them on the power bank or retail box as decorative compliance logos. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yulidapower.com\/fr\/power-bank-label-requirements\/\">power bank label and packaging checklist<\/a> explains how to separate product, retail and transport information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An airline can refuse a shipment that meets the general rule<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulatory compliance does not force an airline to carry the consignment. Airlines and States can impose variations, and a transit airport may affect the route. Send the battery data and proposed packing configuration to the forwarder before booking production around a promised departure date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sea freight requirements for power banks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Power banks shipped by sea are dangerous goods under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code. The IMDG Code 2024 Edition, incorporating Amendment 42-24, became mandatory on 1 January 2026. The shipper and forwarder must use the edition in force when the cargo is offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sea freight can be practical for a commercial order because it is less constrained by aircraft capacity and can support larger consolidated volumes. It is not a compliance shortcut. Equally, do not assume a shipping line will accept a higher state of charge simply because the air rule is not being used. It addresses conditions such as altitude simulation, thermal cycling, vibration, shock, external short circuit, impact or crush, overcharge and forced discharge as applicable. A passed design type supports classification for transport; it is not a general retail safety certificate and does not by itself authorize an air or sea shipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manufacturers and subsequent distributors must make a lithium battery test summary available. The summary should identify the manufacturer and laboratory, report number and date, battery description, mass, Wh rating, model numbers, tests and pass\/fail results, the edition of the UN Manual used and the responsible person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Match the summary to the product being shipped<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Compare the battery or finished-product model number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the cell type, number of cells, connection method, nominal voltage and Wh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compare the battery mass and physical description with the approved sample.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirm the report and laboratory referenced in the summary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Review later changes to the cell, protection circuit, connection method and enclosure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the record linked to the purchase order, production batch and shipping file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A test summary does not have a fixed expiry date if the tested design has not changed in a way that requires retesting. That does not mean an old summary automatically covers a changed product. The UN test framework identifies changes in energy, voltage and other design features that can create a new battery type. IATA notes that an MSDS is not a required transport document for articles. However, some forwarders, carriers, warehouses or commercial compliance teams request an SDS or battery data sheet as part of their internal review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a provider requests one, make sure it describes the same lithium-ion battery and finished product. A generic sheet copied from another cell supplier can create conflicts in chemistry, Wh, model number or manufacturer identity. Ask the provider why it is required and which issue date or format it accepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Power bank shipping document checklist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separate regulatory documents from commercial records and provider-specific requests. At a practical level, each power bank needs protection from short circuit, terminal damage, unintended activation, movement and crushing. IATA guidance describes methods such as fully enclosed non-conductive inner packaging, separation from other batteries and conductive materials, and protection for exposed connectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the approved retail and inner packing arrangement, not loose units in a master carton.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevent USB connectors, built-in cable plugs and exposed metal from contacting conductive objects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cushion products so they cannot shift and damage each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect switches from unintended activation where relevant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the outer packaging required by the selected packing instruction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep carton weight, battery net weight and dimensions within the approved limits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply only the current marks and labels approved for that route.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take photographs after packing and before pallets or overpacks hide the package faces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A retail box that protects a product on a store shelf may not satisfy dangerous-goods package requirements.
