How Long Does It Take to Manufacture a Custom Power Bank in China? OEM/ODM Timeline from RFQ to Shipment (2026)

Short answer: allow roughly 4 to 7 weeks before shipping for an existing power bank model with a logo and standard packaging. Custom colour, cable, packaging or electrical changes usually move the range to 6 to 10 weeks. New tooling, electronics or model-specific compliance testing can push the schedule to 12 to 20 weeks or longer.

These are planning ranges, not a delivery promise. Sending the first enquiry does not start the production clock. The factory can schedule the work once the specification, artwork, commercial terms and approval route are clear enough to act on. Shipping time is separate.

Some stages can run in parallel. Packaging artwork can be prepared while the sample is being built, for example. Others cannot. A factory should not purchase the full packaging quantity before the buyer approves the artwork, and mass production should not start while the electrical specification is still moving.

How long does each type of customization take?

Logo and standard packaging on an existing model

This is usually the shortest route. The battery, PCBA, enclosure and firmware already exist. The factory mainly needs to confirm the logo method, artwork, colour, packaging and order quantity.

A realistic plan is about 4 to 7 weeks before shipment after the sample, artwork and deposit are approved. The order can still be delayed when a selected cell or housing colour is not in stock, or when the buyer requests a packaging structure that needs a new die line.

Custom colour, cable, display or retail package

Changes that look small on a drawing may affect several suppliers. A custom enclosure colour requires colour matching and sample approval. A different built-in cable may change the connector, length, moulded strain relief or charging profile. A display change can involve both the screen and firmware.

Plan on roughly 6 to 10 weeks before shipment. Ask the manufacturer which parts are standard and which must be purchased or developed specifically for the order.

New enclosure, tooling or electronic design

A new housing is a development project, not a printing order. Industrial design, mechanical review, prototype work, tooling, trial shots, fit checks and reliability testing all come before mass production. Electronic changes can require a PCB revision, firmware work and another round of safety or compatibility tests.

Allow at least 12 to 20 weeks for planning, and longer when the design has unresolved thermal, charging or mechanical issues. The buyer should define who owns the tooling, how revisions are approved and what happens if the first trial does not meet the signed specification.

Step 1: Send an RFQ that a factory can quote

“Please quote a 10,000mAh power bank” is not enough. Two products with that label can use different cells, output power, protocols, ports, protection circuits and packaging. The quotations will not be comparable.

Send the same written requirement to every shortlisted supplier. Include:

  • Target capacity in mAh and nominal energy in Wh.
  • Required USB-C input and output power, USB-A output and charging protocols.
  • Wireless charging power and magnetic alignment requirements, if applicable.
  • Built-in cable, AC plug, display, flashlight or other functional requirements.

Step 2: Complete feasibility review before approving the price

A price has little value if the proposed hardware cannot meet the requirement. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the cell configuration, PCBA, total output allocation, simultaneous charging behaviour, enclosure limits and available test documents.

Pay attention to phrases such as “up to 22.5W” or “supports PD.” Ask which port provides that output, under what voltage profile, and what happens when two outputs are used together. A specification conflict discovered after the packaging is printed is expensive and slow to correct.

Step 3: Choose the right sample route

Each sample stage answers a different question. A stock sample checks the basic model, while a branded sample checks the logo and presentation. The pre-production sample should represent the approved production configuration.

Sign and date the approved pre-production sample. Record the model, cell, PCBA revision, firmware, colour, logo, packaging and accessories. That sample becomes the reference for production inspection. If a component changes later, require written notice and approval.

Step 4: Confirm compliance before locking the schedule

Existing reports can save time only when they cover the product being ordered. Match the model number, battery cell, electrical design, wireless function and target market to the documents. A report for a similar-looking product is not automatic coverage for a new configuration.

If a new test is needed, obtain a laboratory quotation and test plan before promising a launch date. Testing, report review and corrective work may take several weeks. A failed test or hardware change can restart part of the process.

Step 5: Purchase materials and approve the production plan

Material lead time is often the real bottleneck. Cells, PCBAs and standard housings may be available quickly, while a custom display, cable, carton or colour can take longer. An order of 2,000 pieces does not always take twice as long as 1,000 pieces; the limiting component and the available production slot matter more.

Before material purchasing starts, confirm the approved bill of materials, packaging files, quantity by variant, deposit, requested completion date and rules for substitution. Ask for a production schedule with milestones rather than one final date.

Step 6: Control the first production run

A typical production flow includes incoming inspection, cell sorting or matching, PCBA checks, assembly, functional testing, ageing, cosmetic inspection and packaging. The exact sequence depends on the model.

For a new or modified product, request a first-article or pilot-run review before the whole order is assembled. It is easier to correct a cable fit, label position or firmware setting after a small batch than after 2,000 finished units.

Define measurable acceptance limits in advance. Step 7: Inspect, release and book the shipment

Final inspection should happen after the order is complete and packed, but before shipment release. Check quantity, workmanship, function, packaging, marks, accessories and the agreed sample size. Keep the inspection report and any corrective-action record with the order file.

Transport time begins only after the cargo is accepted and booked. Lithium battery shipments may have carrier, route, packaging and documentation constraints that do not apply to ordinary goods. Ask the forwarder for a route-specific schedule. Avoid building a launch plan around a generic “air takes one week” or “sea takes one month” estimate.

What usually delays a power bank OEM order?

  • An incomplete specification. The buyer and factory are quoting different products without noticing.
  • Late artwork revisions. Changes to labels, manuals or packaging can hold material purchasing.
  • Unclear compliance scope. Testing is discussed only after the product and launch date are fixed.
  • Component changes. A cell, PCBA, cable or enclosure is substituted without a controlled review.
  • Slow sample approval. The sample waits for comments while the requested delivery date stays unchanged.
  • Peak-season capacity. Production slots, packaging suppliers and freight space tighten around busy periods and holidays.
  • Inspection failure. Rework and reinspection are needed before shipment release.

How can buyers shorten the lead time without increasing risk?

  1. Use an existing platform when the launch date matters more than a unique enclosure.
  2. Freeze the product specification before approving price and artwork.
  3. Send editable logo, label and packaging files at the start of the project.
  4. Decide the target markets early so the correct reports and labels can be reviewed.
